India staring at a shortfall in births by 2050, warn experts

A recent study published in The Lancet warns that India's total fertility rate (TFR), or births per woman, will fall to 1.29 by 2050. India's TFR was 6.18 in 1950, 4.6 in 1980, and 1.91 in 2021, which is less than the replacement level, or the average number of children per woman required to sustain a steady population size of 2.1.
